REMEMBERING AND HONORING THE SERVICE OF CAPT. SAMUEL SCHWEIGERT
The Perkiomen Valley School District lost a long-time supporter in December 2012 with the passing of Capt. Samuel Schweigert, who had served on the Perkiomen Valley School Board for nearly 20 years. We are saddened to lose such a dedicated and committed Board member, who placed a high value on public education and revered the country in which we live.
During his time on the Board, Capt. Schweigert served on the Legislative, Negotiations and Finance Committees. He also demonstrated a strong commitment to the North Montco Technical Career Center, where he served on the Joint Operating Committee for approximately 15 years.
Capt. Schweigert’s desire to serve the public did not end with the school district. He also served on the Schwenksville Borough Authority, Schwenksville Borough Council, and the Schwenksville Library Board. He belonged to the Patriotic Order Sons of America organization, as well as to the Masonic Lodge.
Because of an accident when he was in high school, Capt. Schweigert did not graduate. He joined the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1943, traveled around the world, and retired after 47 years of service. He settled in Schwenksville in 1973 with his wife, Sarah (now deceased), and three daughters (whom he is survived by today). In June 2011, Perkiomen Valley School District presented Capt. Schweigert with a well-deserved honorary diploma.
We extend our sympathies to Capt. Schweigert’s family during this time, and hope they will take comfort in the fact that Capt. Schweigert’s contributions to our district will not be forgotten. His spirit of volunteerism, his dedication to the community he lived in, and his belief in public education will remain as examples to us all.
